On the afternoon of April 3, 2025, the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Livestock Association convened a meeting (in both in-person and online formats) to review the implementation results of Q1/2025 and to set forth the key tasks for Q2/2025. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Nguyễn Xuân Dương, President of the Vietnam Livestock Association.
Overview of the Standing Committee Meeting of the Vietnam Livestock Association, Q1/2025
At the meeting, Dr. Nguyễn Ngọc Sơn, Standing Vice President of the Association, presented a summary report on the Association’s recent activities and sought opinions from the Standing Committee regarding the directions and key tasks of the Association in Q2 and the following months.
Growth of Livestock Herds and Pork Price Developments in Q1/2025
According to the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), Q1/2025 recorded stable development in the livestock sector, with positive growth in pig and poultry herds, ensuring sufficient domestic supply. Data from the General Statistics Office showed that by the end of February 2025, the pig herd reached 26.8 million heads (up 3.2% year-on-year), the poultry flock stood at 574.5 million heads (up 3.4%), while the cattle and buffalo herds experienced slight declines, with 6.32 million heads (-0.5%) and 2.1 million heads (-4.4%) respectively.
The livestock products market also saw notable fluctuations, particularly in live hog prices. While poultry meat and egg prices fell sharply at the end of February, live hog prices surged, especially in the southern region. Specifically, in January 2025, prices ranged from 65,000–69,000 VND/kg, up 10–12% compared to the end of 2024; in February, prices continued to rise to 72,000–75,000 VND/kg (up 15–18%). In early March, prices hit their highest level in three years, with Dong Nai province reaching 83,000 VND/kg. However, from mid-March, prices began to stabilize and slightly declined, currently ranging from 74,000–81,000 VND/kg depending on the region.
Compared with other countries in the region, live hog prices in Vietnam remain higher than those in China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar (55,000–63,000 VND/kg), but still lower than in the Philippines (100,000–115,000 VND/kg). At this price level, farmers could secure profits of 15,000–20,000 VND/kg. The price increase was attributed to the impact of livestock diseases at the end of 2024, which reduced the sow herd in southern provinces, as well as stricter environmental and livestock management regulations in the Southeast region. In addition, tighter control of smuggled live hogs and pork imports contributed to supply-side adjustments in the domestic market.
